A sports betting
shop close to the viewing centre came alive at the highly anticipated match,
with successful gamblers, who had predicted a win for Nigeria trooping to the
place to claim their prizes.
Asmau Danlami, a
native of Kaduna, who predicted that the Super Eagles would win the match by
more than one goal, said he staked with N5, 000 and won N19, 000.
“I am very proud of
the performance of our boys on Friday, they played like the real Super Eagles
known and respected all over the world. This victory has ensured that this
weekend is going to be interesting for me,” he said.
At a viewing centre at the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos, supporters of the team,
who had abandoned their drinks on tables all through the first half, hurriedly
emptied them and ordered for more when the tide of the game swung in favour of
Nigeria. Chants of excitement were all that filled the ears.
“I am highly
excited. It’s been a long time Nigeria gave us this kind of victory
“When the Super Eagles were going for the tournament, they
raised our hope in the way they qualified. But in the first match, they let
everybody down.
“However,
with this performance, I am now fully behind the team and hope that they go
far,” a fan, Kayode Kajola, said, adding that he and his wife were going to
celebrate with victory in a special way in the bedroom on Friday night.
After the
game, another viewer at the centre, Samuel Otunba, expressed confidence that
Argentina were going to find it tough against Nigeria in the next and most
important match of the group stage if the coach picked the squad that defeated
Iceland on Friday.
“With what
we played today, Argentina are in trouble,” he boasted. “You can see the
enthusiasm, the passion and the belief in our players. If we continue like
this, Nigeria will go far,” he added excitedly
